#quantaluce grew out of the idea of binding Naples to photography, setting aside the preconceptions and stereotypes that have always defined the city: pizza, Vesuvius and mandolin.
Light is a fundamental element in photography: you can play with it endlessly, shaping it, hiding it or bringing it out. So is Naples, with its bright, splendid light on the seafront as it reflects off the rocks of via Caracciolo, and equally hidden in the alleys of the old town. A contrast of light and shadow, as in a photograph.
The city — squares, streets, places, monuments and buildings — is the fixed capital, lasting through time: the light. The people, whether residents or passing travellers, are the capital that varies in time and with time: the shadows.
#quantaluce is the short writings of Maurizio de Giovanni, the photographs of Carlo Arace and the music of Umberto Sorbo. The exhibition opened on 10 September 2014 at PAN — Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, and ran until 25 September.
