Umberto Sorbo is a composer for film and documentary, a musician and electronic engineer, and the creator of the Guitap.

Umberto Sorbo is a composer of scores for film and documentary. Trained in piano and cello at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, he conducted a twenty-piece youth orchestra for five years, giving around eighty concerts between Rome and southern Italy. Since 2019 he has scored films and documentaries, including “Cercando Bernadette” and “Un eretico in corsia”, nominated for the David di Donatello awards. An electronic engineer, he is the creator of the Guitap, a ten-string guitar for two-handed tapping, handmade with luthier Enzo Pascariello. He writes about music technology for Age of Audio.

Umberto Sorbo is a composer of scores for film and documentary, a musician and an electronic engineer. He began with classical training in piano and cello at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, and went on to chamber music. Over the years he played in several ensembles and conducted a small youth orchestra of twenty musicians, giving around eighty concerts in five years, from Rome to southern Italy.

He has been writing for the screen since 2019. His work includes “La casa degli assassini” (2019), “Un eretico in corsia” (2020), nominated for the David di Donatello awards, “Tornare a casa” (2023) and “Cercando Bernadette” (2024), whose main theme is an Ave Maria performed by soprano Chiara Taigi. He has also composed for international projects: “Izvor Voda” for Camerata Vocale Split, and “Tarantella Storta” for Paul Kopetz’s “50 for 50” project, performed in Australia, the Netherlands and the United States.

The other half of his work is music technology: he has collaborated with companies in the field on instrument development, and is the creator of the Guitap, a ten-string guitar conceived for two-handed tapping and handmade together with luthier Enzo Pascariello.
