Towards A Shining Light
Fifty composers from twenty-five countries, each writing a one-minute self-portrait for clarinet, viola and piano trio. Mine is called “Tarantella Storta”.

The project began with Paul Kopetz’s visit, in 2022, to the Museum of Humanity in Zaandam, in the Netherlands. Looking at hundreds of human faces of different ethnic origins, cultural heritages and life stories, he thought it would be fascinating to do the same through music: to find out how music-making reflects the human condition in our modern world.
Does music represent unity or diversity? Can a composer speak directly to a listener about who they are, through one minute of music?
Fifty composers from around the world, professionals and amateurs alike, were invited to write a one-minute self-portrait for clarinet, viola and piano trio. The countries represented are Argentina, Australia, Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Macedonia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the USA and Venezuela. Styles range from classical and film music, traditional and contemporary, to innovative jazz, fusion and experimental work.
All fifty self-portraits are presented as a continuous collage in live performance, each accompanied by a projected image supplied by the composer.
